Lever or automatic coffee maker? Here are 4 questions to help you find answer

There is no universal answer – we are different, we have different needs, requirements, demands, and financial possibilities. Which possibility is best for you? You can guess, but the risk is high. We can guide you correctly by formulating well-asked questions to help you find best answer for you. If you are deciding whether to choose a lever or automatic coffee machine, ask these 4 basic questions.

How much coffee I make every day?

Every coffee shop is different. If you’re a coffee shop, you’re likely to count hundreds of espresso cups per day. In this case, you will find the limits of an automatic coffee machine very quickly, we recommend considering choice of lever coffee machine. If you are a small guesthouse or restaurant where you make 30 coffees a day, investing in an expensive leverage machine is unnecessary.

With this number, the payback would be extremely long, if at all. In addition, you would have to train the staff, take a lot of care to maintain the machine, while the automatic coffee machine cleans itself practically alone, just pour the coffee, press the button and it takes care of everything else. From our experience, we can say that in terms of quantity magic limit is 30 coffees a day.

How much space do I have for coffee machine?

An important role is also played by the space you have or can set aside for the coffee machine. In most cases the automatic coffee machine will occupy less than 1m2, so it can also be in the hotel room without unnecessarily reducing the comfort of the guests. The same applies to the bar table.

If you want a lever coffee machine, yes – single-lever machines are relatively space-saving, on the other hand to prepare quality coffee in large quantities require a very handy barista. For this reason, we recommend reaching for a double-lever machine for better warming up of the levers. You have to also add a coffee grinder. This takes at least about 4 m2 for these machine in order to keep you required space.

How much am I willing to invest?

This question has two factors – one is financial and the other is time. So let’s start with the first, if you do not make more than 30 coffees a day, then you can buy a fully automatic coffee machine for less than 1000 € for your needs. And no other costs are waiting for you – you don’t need to send an employee for a barista course, you don’t have to buy a grinder, and you get a machine that can make tea or chocolate in addition to coffee – by pressing one button. So the time costs are minimal.

A lever coffee machine is more expensive: both time and money. Be ready to pay for a machine of sufficient quality around 2,000€ plus another € 400 for a decent grinder and tens of euros for water treatment. And now the more expensive part – investing in personnel. You need to train or pay for a person who can use the machine’s potential because a lever coffee machine won’t give you anything for free. Here, the highest investment is not the financial part, but the time. If you have the money, the patience, talented people and the desire to make good coffee, a lever machine is probably the right choice for you.

What is your expected coffee quality?

Buying a four-headed coffee machine for 6000€ does not automatically mean that coffee prepared in an automatic machine will not taste better. This is where one of the most important element takes part – person. Virtually anyone can press one button, but grind the coffee properly, press it down with just the right lever, select the right grammage, keep the machine in great condition – it’s hard.

However, if you expect top quality coffee, the automatic coffee machine will not deliver it, experienced espressophil will always recognize the difference. However, it all falls down to person who will be responsible for the cup of espresso person: the quality, attitude and passion for making coffee is important. If you are unable to acquire, shape or transform yourself into such a person, we are again at the point that an automatic coffee machine may be a better choice for you.
